Thanks Given

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Interesting fact:
William DeVaughn was paid a mere $900 for his 1972 #1, Be Thankful (For What You Got).
Lesser known fact:
Embarrassingly enough, up until maybe a few years ago I always under the impression this was a Curtis Mayfield track.
Much more interesting fact than that last one:Several great reggae covers exist by the likes of
Cornell Campbell, Bunny Clarke, Donovan Carless and One Blood

Cornell Campbell - Be Thankful
Cornell Campbell – Thankful Dub
Bunny Clarke - Be Thankful
Donovan Carless – Be Thankful
Donovan Carless – Be Thankful Dub
One Blood – Be Thankful

Enjoy!

Jesus Freaks:Part Deux

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Not unlike the tenets of reggae, 80′s spacerock revival band Spacemen 3 were an odd mixture of drugs, heady music and of all things, Jesus. However I’m pretty certain that Kember and Pierce and Co. weren’t exactly thumping for the sake of thumping, as evidenced in their classic Walkin’ with Jesus, their ode to tipping off the hole-y one about their impending hedonism.
So for today’s disciples we start off with my pick o the litter Sweden’s Girlfrendo, whose female vocals and overall twee-ness will charm the cardigan off you. American Myth take their version into the backwoods of Appalachia and The Muslims, Los Alamos and The Icarus Line all turn out some fine indie/folk renditions.

Girlfrendo – Walkin’ With Jesus
American Myth – Walkin’ With Jesus
The Muslims – Walkin’ With Jesus
Los Alamos – Walkin’ With Jesus
The Icarus Line – Walkin’ With Jesus

***Last minute addendum

Mirabilia – Walkin’ With Jesus

Enjoy!
