Yet another icon joins the choir invisible. I really should change the Versions motto ‘I hear dead people’.
But in all seriousness tough, this is a big loss.
While many artists back in the day reluctantly got their toes wet with disco (coughcoughDianaRosscough) via the heavy hands of coke addled record execs looking to cash in on the new sound, Donna Summer was 70s disco funk through and through. She set the vocal bar pretty high for all her surrounding contemporaries.
So really wanted to drop State of Independence for this one, but lo, I just realized it’s not an original Donna, it’s a cover (maysomething for later then). So I thought I’d bring out a 3rd installment of my fave proto electro/house track, the Moroder driven I Feel Love.
First up is are two robotic versions; a cute electro/indie-pop cut from The New Deal and bizarre experimental synth pop version from Bob. Next is a drone-y gypsy bongo rendition from Hamburg’s Kristof Schreuf (who also weaves in bits of Ride Like The Wind). Say what you will about the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the frat ilk that follow them these days (I know I do), but they’ve always had great personal music taste and their brief cover of I Feel Love (featuring Frusciante on falsetto) is pretty inspired considering. And lastly is an experimental metal one from ex-Racer X, Paul Gilbert. Not really my bag, but I’ll slack for posterity on this one.

BTW For those that missed the original I Feel Love postings be sure to have a gander here and also here)

Personally I can’t think of anything whiter or probably less soulful than UK indie synthpop duo The Ting Tings, whose whose little jingle That’s Not My Name seems to be on inifite loop at my gym. Gotta admit though it’s catchy and I often find my fat ass breathlessly humming along ‘They Call Me Stacey! They call me Jane!’ whenever I’m in spin class.
However along comes Brighton’s The Impellers, on the ever infallible Freestyle Records label, to extinguish all that unnecessary guilt with their brilliant 60s style heavy funk/soul rendition (fans of Sharon Jones and Baby Charles, grab this).

The Impellers – That’s Not My Name

Enjoy!

PS Out of town at The Ace (Palm Springs) for the next few days for some much needed vitamin D and mojitos. See you when I get back…

Johnny Kidd & The Pirates were an influential UK rock and roll outfit known for being one of the few pre-British Invasion groups to achieve some global success prior to the Beatles. They are primarily known for their cult 1959 rocker classic, and today’s cover fodder, Please Don’t Touch. And they were also known for their theatrics, dressing up like pirates with Kidd going so far as to donning an eyepatch. Seems pretty pedestrian by today’s standards but practically unheard of back in the 50s, thus paving the way for Paul Revere & The Raiders, Screaming Lord Sutch, Alice Cooper and even to some degree Adam & The Ants. Tragically however The Pirates rise was cut short when Kidd died in a car accident in 1966. In the end Kidd’s musical legacy was an influence on blues based rock and rockabilly that was done not in imitation of the original but rather in their own tenor, a style that would be picked up later to great effect by The Rolling Stones.
Like I mentioned earlier Please Don’t Touch is a bit of a cult classic and has become quite the go-to standard for many a rockabilly and rocker. However I’m going to lead the pack as I tradionally do with the more unconventional takes.
First is Uberwensch. I got a softspot for dirty analog-electro-garge rock electronics (ala Add N to X) and and an even softer for saucy UK lasses like it’s lead wensch Pippa Brooks. Pippa is one of those poly-talented, fashionable creatives that you see in i-D magazine whose got more ideas in her small, probably well-painted, toenail than any of us combined will have in a lifetime. At this point I’ll stop gushing.
While I’m sure Uberwensch won’t be everyone’s bag, you may dig my second favorite of the lot Kurt Wagner & Cortney Tidwell‘s alt country version. Wagner (of Lambchop fame) and Tidwell (Grand Ole Opry legacy child and all around go-to Nashville songwriter) slow their rendtition down a few notches from the usual frenetic pace Touch is known for, to a nice dreamy slide.
Next up a double bass case worth of rockabilly/pyschobilly versions (from Amulet to West Five). Standouts include dos versiones España; Nena No Me Toques from The Evil Ones and Loquillo Y Los Intocables. Me gusta! There were also a perplexing amount of Swedish ones (in both rockabilly and rock). Both Amulet and Johnny & The Dodgers stuck to their native tongues (Ei Koskettaa Saa) but special mention must also go out to the Slaptones a Swedish all-girl rockabilly trio. Oh and Japan represents too with the psychotic Battle Of Ninjamanz. You’ll also notice The Pirates, who were the remaining members of the original Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, and later recut a new version of their own.
Last batch (Crucified to Torment, lol.) is the rock ones. This a mixed bag of straight ahead rock, punk, garage and a little metal. Speaking of the latter, when compiling today’s feature I came across several of these that were incorrectly listed as Motörhead covers. That is because in 1980 Lemmy and 1st wave British metal all-girl outfit Girlschool (under the moniker Headgirl) own their version so thoroughly that people often mistake it for the original. Barring that tidbit, there are more yet more Swedes (Enhärjarna and Fuckin’ Hippies) as well as Japan’s infamous garage rocker trio Mad 3 (featuring Nippon ichibon badass and ex-founding 5,6,7,8′s, Eddie Legend). Oh and an early rare cover by some guy named David Bowie.

Gutted today to say the least and it feels as if I lost an old classmate.
To say that MCA, as well as the other remaining Beastie Boys, have made a global impact on culture would be an understatement. Besides being the obvious major force in hip hop, their influence could also be felt in fashion, sketch comedy (Andy Samburg, Flight of the Conchords anyone?) and even global politics, what with Yauch’s heavy promotion of Tibetan causes. On another personal note had the opportunity to design for (and be invited to) an event with the Beastie Boys speaking recently. All three were there including a very frail Adam Yauch. Any heaviness to the situation was quickly undercut by a 300 strong crowd of fans who all stood to applaud very long and loud. A living tribute to say the least.
Since I already tackled Fight For Your Right To Party some moons ago, here’s what I got on short notice; 2 1/2 covers of Brass Monkey (not the most subtle right now I know, but when were the Beastie Boys ever subtle?).
Two lounge versions by ineffable Richard Cheese and a long instrumental blues/bugaloo rendition by Reuben Wilson (Ex-Blue Note-r) & Bernie Worrell (Ex-Funkadelic).

Alt hip hop flavor of the month and runner up for the world’s filthiest mouth
Tyler the Creator get’s the coverage treatment today. Tyler and his Odd Future collective have been hailed as the second coming by anyone within sniffing distance of Hypebeast what with them also being quite the talented streetwear and graphic designers (of which yours truly is acutally a fan). That said he also has his fair share of detractors due to his colorful language and misogynistic lyrics.
Well here’s something I think they both can enjoy; a funky straight ahead instrumental jazz medley of Tyler’s Nightmare and Yonkers from hard hitting Toronto trio BadBadNotGood.
For those who miss his insightful and often poignant lyrics, feel free to rap along “I’m a fuckin’ walkin’ paradox…”

BadBadNotGood – Nightmare/Yonkers

Chances are if you’ve ever heard the The Beastie Boys or anything produced by Dr. Dre then you’ll recognize the signature buzz and break opening to The Jackson Sisters‘ I Believe Miracles. Not to be confused with Janet, LaToya or Jermaine, The Jackson Sisters were a Detroit-based (by way of Compton) soul group who enjoyed some minor recognition during the mid 70s. While only having one album and a couple of singles under their belt before vanishing back into the mahogany, a decade and some change later they enjoyed a resurgence via the UK rare groove scene and subsequently Miracles becoming a b-boy sampling favorite.
Believers for today include The Dynamics and their reggae-disco hustle rendition, a spry Cubano cut via Sunlightsquare Latin Combo and a focused intrumental break version from the always welcome El Michels Affair. Also today are two straight ahead soul cuts from Japan’s Indigo Jam Unit & Flexlife as well a rare cut by Miracles original co-penner Mark Capanni.

By the early 80s the Sex Pistol’s Anarchy In The UK seemed a million miles away for us bored middle class Californian teens. Politics was personal, and whether it was out of sheer convenience or self centered angst we our wanted anarchy here; In the suburbs, at the mall and curbside next to our skateboards. So if ever there was an anthem for ‘Hey Mom/Dad, stay the %$#@ out of my room!’ it’s this one; Institutionalized by Suicidal Tendencies.
But today in Versions Bizzaro-land the indignant SoCal punk anthem has been replaced by two lounge versions; a hilarious campy cabaret rendition by Kiki & Herb and a bad tux and cocktail-worthy cover by Black Velvet Flag.

If they’re lucky, some songs may get that one good catchy catchphrase that’ll get tossed around for an entire summer i.e., ‘Get Your Freak On!’, ‘I Wanna Rock!’, ‘P-p-p-okerface! GaGa Uhma GaGa’ (Hey, I didn’t necessarily say they were always good songs)
Anyway unlike most,I always felt R&B rumpshaker No Diggity, by Blackstreet, contained a veritable goldmine of one-liners. Most of the 90s was spent making that coy face where you squint your eyes, bite your bottom lip, throw down some pointy fingers and poorly croon ‘No Diggity, No Doubt’ or ‘I Like The Way You Work It’ or even ‘Hey-O Hey-O Hey-O Hey-OOOOOO’ (pointy fingers pointing skyward for that last one).
Damn I miss 90s hip hop. Parties, wherein lots of white people are dancing, just haven’t been the same without it.
So put your hands in the air for 3 soul-ful versions of No Diggity; a brassy marching band rendition from Versions faves The Hackney Colliery Band, a dub step influenced cut from Chet Faker (James Blake fans grab this), and lastly one from indie darlings Klaxons who prove they either have soul or a good sense of humor (or possibly both).

The Hackney Colliery Band – No Diggity

Apologies if I’ve upset the nest by going on a necessary, but futile, diversion.
As always, dalliances with side project mistresses only seem to leave me feeling guilty, somewhat unsatisfied, and a with burning sensation in my most sensitive of areas (i.e., my ego).
So today I dutifully return to my beautiful wife/beautiful home, Versions Galore hopefully with some renewed vigor.
Once In A Lifetime oddly enough will always remind me of Hawaii. Like a lot of music in the 80s the first time I heard the The Talking Heads is when I actually saw The Talking Heads on MTV. This particular time was on a family vacation in Maui, where like, a totally bored adolescent me decided to flip on the TV in the rented flat only to be greeted with what looked as if Buddy Holly had been left in the dryer for too long. Hypnotized, I watched as David Byrne spazzed, jerked and engaged in strange hand signals in time to repetitions of ‘Same as it ever was’. There my little 10 year old mind was blown and the same uncontrollable pop culture instincts that took over my body two years previously with breakdancing had now been re-awakened again. To the bewilderment of my parents (a common state with them), the remainder of the vacation was spent with me twitching and flinching and karate chopping my arms. I may have thought I was David Byrne, but, dressed head to toe in 80s Maui & Sons surfwear instead of a 3 piece suit, I looked more like Spiccolli with a mild case of epilepsy.
You may find your self in a timeshare condo indeed.

So would be Head-hunters for today include two abstract electronic versions from NYC; a brilliant one via Chico Mann the other a close second from Plumbline.
Also in an electronic vein is a tidy little minimal techno version from The Slacksons (here re-titled as Same As It Ever Was).
And lastly is a calypso rendition that only Belafonte could love from cover cut-ups Big Daddy.

Chico Mann – Once In A Lifetime

The late avant-jazz experimentalist and all around funky space captain, Sun Ra, gets the cover treatment today. Primarily known for his Egypt-meets-intergalactic-travel outfits, album covers and outsider music his influence extends well past just the realms of jazz. A truncated and disparate crib sheet of self-proclaimed disciples could include Spiritualized, AR Kane, My Bloody Valentine, early Pink Floyd, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, Gilles Peterson, Blur, the Editors as well as old school hip-hoppers Egyptian Lover, Afrika Bambatta and funkateers Parliament all but outright plundering his cosmic pharaoh style.
While he was usually taking jazz to where no man’s gone before with his avant garde improvisations, he was also known to occasionally come back down to earth to pen the sublime love sonnet and today’s satellite, Love In Outer Space, is no exception. Channeling their inner Ra today are Warp’s Jimi Tenor and NY’s Belle Boussole who effortlessly keep the soul intact on their electronic/downtempo versions. Somewhere, out beyond Pluto, Sun Ra is grinning ear to ear.

To the loyal Versions readers who have noticed the large blocks of time in between posts these days (as well as many unfortunately unanswered emails) I’ve been hard at work on a big side project the last 4 months. But the absentee landlord does have a, very long-winded, explanation.
Despite being immersed in west coast culture all my life, sadly I can’t skate, I can barely surf and I don’t cycle (motor, fixie or otherwise). This was thanks in no large part to an overprotective mother, who wouldn’t let me near a butter knife until I was 12 (no joke), let alone letting me enjoy any of the above ‘death traps’. So most of my youth was spent decked out in my JimmyZ shorts and Maui & Sons tees but with my wings pretty much clipped, all while having to endure watching my friends get to do ‘ollies’, ‘cutbacks’ or even taking their BMXs on any sweet jumps.
For better or for worse all my energy would get channeled into the art and music. I became an avid collector of west coast punk, surf, reggae and electro-funk. And whenever someone needed a Bones Brigade or Suicidal Tendencies skull on the back of their jacket, I was their guy.
So what’s changed? Nada far as I can tell. The day job is a pleasant mix of design, illustration,‘street art’ and the occasional streetwear graphic, all of which brings me full circle to my point. I’m proud to have launched a new magazine: WESTERN CIV, dedicated to the best in ‘ride culture’ AKA skate, surf, cars and cycling (motor, fixie or otherwise). Ironically enough wings are still clipped.
And of course there’s still music, bringing me to today’s post. UK techno classic Pacific 202 by 808 State gets a cheeky instrumental surf guitar retrofitting by Germany’s Dauerfisch. Also thrown in for brilliant measure is an orchestrated version by the genius that is Jeremy Deller and his Williams Fairey Brass Band project.

Dauerfisch – Pacific 202

PPS And for those of you who skate, surf, cycle and drive better than me (AKA all of you), drop by at my new project at WESTERN CIV…

Randomly stumbled across today’s cover when doing a google search to replace a broken TV remote (don’t ask); a cover of TV On The Radio‘s DLZ by the somewhat mysterious Silent Rider. So true rings that maxim of ‘happy accident’ as this NYC duo’s dubstep-influenced rendition manages to really hit that sweet spot of what a good cover should be; rising above the standard note-for-note with just enough personal flair to call it their own. Also in fine fettle is a bluegrass-influenced cover by Vancouver’s Matthew Gruman which has all the charm and warmth of sounding like it was produced in a living room with a few good friends and a bottle of 2 Buck Chuck.

Day job has been calling a lot recently, so barely any time for r&r, friends (real or internet versions) or even minding the store here at Versions Galore on any kind of a regular basis. However I did find half a minute today to pull one out by The Clash from their infamous and vastly under appreciated Sandinista! album; the apocalyptic Charlie Don’t Surf.
Barrelling right through, here are the only two versions that Versions could stomach; a dubby downtempo version from Cool Breeze (from the sadly quiet these days Dorado/Filter label) and out to prove that Charlie can indeed hang ten are Pollo Del Mar with a sublime instrumental surf cut.

Been on a Detroit techno kick as of late and in the process stumbled upon a couple of great Versions-worthy covers. For those slaves to the six string who have a hard time separating the “T” word from images of pacifier chomping K-soaked rave zombies or worse, Lady Gaga, need I school you on the fact that real, pure, Motor City techno is the greatest (but most sorely overlooked) contribution to African-American music since jazz or perhaps Parliament.
Arguably it’s originator is today’s tribute fodder, ‘Magic’ Juan Atkins (AKA Cybotron), and his pioneering single Cosmic Cars. Released in 1982 it was promptly filed alongside Afrika Bambaataa’s Planet Rock under “Electro” until the late 80s when it would be re-christened a proto-techno classic.
Paying homage today is fellow D-Town-ers The Dirtbombs with a great n’ dingy lo-fi garage rock cover as well as a rare (and somewhat out-of-tune) 80s funk cover by Ken Lewis.

Unlike my post on AC/DC the other day, I got nothing but nice things to say about Van Halen. Despite being a dyed in the wool, cardigan carrying Smiths fan in high school, I always secretly dug VH. The inner hesher inside me always wanted to roll up in the school parking lot with aviator shades in a bitchin’ camero blaring Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love, yelling ‘HEYYYYYY WHO WANTS TOOOO PAAAAAARTAAAY!’ While Diamond Dave may have been the antithesis of Morrissey, these lyrics could just have easily come from This Charming Man himself. Get your best Moz voice on and give it a whirl…
” My friend, ain’t talkin’ ’bout love
My love is rotten to the core
Ain’t talkin’ ’bout love
Just like I told you before, uh before, uh before, before.”
BTW did I mention I’m known for my spot on Morrissey impersonation? On Smiths karaoke night in Little Tokyo, I take that shit every time.
Anyway where was I? Oh yeah Van Halen and Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love. Got 4 covers. Fave by a long shot is a warped lo-fi electronic version from the aptly named Moog Cookbook (with Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo guesting on keyboards). Also digging the jazzy dub take by Germany’s Jazzkantine. Eddie Van Halens of the banjo, Iron Horse turn out a mean Dixie cut and punk legends the Minutemen (Mike Watt FTW!) beat their namesake with a 42 second cover.

Before Santogold, MIA and other art damaged divas there was Kelis and her Milkshake. A Neptunes produced R&B oddity buzzing with great low-end electro bass and the promise of free milk that went on to be a massive rack shaker. La la LA LA LA…still waiting on that great follow-up Kel.
So drinking that Milkshake today are 5 cover contenders. A nice likkle dubby downtempo version from Tiger Hifi (btw loving these guys, expect to see more of them here soon.), an electro/chiptune rendition from Norway’s Tomas Nördstrom and a big folk-indie cut by The Pictures. And good for a laugh are a gone in 50 seconds cabaret/lounge version from the always welcomed Richard Cheese and an over the top Metallica/punk-styled one from Goodnight Nurse.
